Prof. Dr Piyaporn SAENSOUK, <\/strong>a SCIMSU researcher, and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Surapon SAENSOUK, a researcher from Walai Rukhavej Botanical Research Institute, discovered Boesenbergia isanensis (Zingiberaceae), a new species from northeastern Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Boesenbergia isanensis<\/em> Saensouk &amp; P. Saensouk, sp. nov. (<em>Zingiberaceae<\/em>) is described from northeastern Thailand. Description, photograph, illustration, vernacular name, distribution, ecology, uses and phenology of this species are provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Boesenbergia isanensis<\/em><\/strong> Saensouk &amp; P. Saensouk, <strong>sp. nov.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><em>Boesenbergia isanensis<\/em> is similar to B. rotunda (L.) Mansf. but it differs in the plant size 70\u201380 cm tall, the rhizome dark yellow inside, the root dark yellow inside, the leaf blades glabrous and dark red on the midrib of the upper surface, densely pubescent on the lower surface, and the cream coloured flowers, with labellum red in the apical half and cream in the basal half, pubescent at centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perennial herb, 70\u201380 cm tall to the top of leaf blades. Rhizomes are short, outside dark brown, inside dark yellow, bearing tubular storage roots. Roots yellow outside, dark yellow inside. Bladeless leaf sheaths 6\u20137, 19.5\u201321 cm long, dark green, pubescent; foliage leaves 5\u20136; leaf sheaths 19.5\u201321 cm long, dark green, densely pubescent; ligules broadly oblong, 1\u20131.7 \u00d7 0.8\u20131 cm, bilobed, hairy; petioles 5\u20139 cm long, dark green, sparsely pubescent; blade elliptic-oblong, 20\u201327 \u00d7 4\u201310 cm, apex acute-acuminate, base attenuate, upper surface dark green with dark red midribs, glabrous, lower surface greenish, densely pubescent. Inflorescence terminal, 6\u20137 cm long, with ca. 7 flowers opening 1 (or 2 to 3) after another; peduncle 1.5\u20132 cm long, sparsely pubescent, enclosed in the leaf sheaths. Bract 1 per flower, green, lanceolate, sparsely pubescent, appearing only in the rainy season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/science.msu.ac.th\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10747\" width=\"257\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/science.msu.ac.th\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-4.png 343w, https:\/\/science.msu.ac.th\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-4-203x300.png 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><figcaption>Boesenbergia isanensis Saensouk &amp; P. Saensouk, sp. nov.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phenology:<\/strong> Flowering and fruiting in the rainy season (July\u2013August).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vernacular name:<\/strong> Kra &#8211; Chai &#8211; Pha (\u0e01\u0e23\u0e30\u0e0a\u0e32\u0e22\u0e1b\u0e48\u0e32), or Kra \u2013 Chai \u2013 Isan (\u0e01\u0e23\u0e30\u0e0a\u0e32\u0e22\u0e2d\u0e35\u0e2a\u0e32\u0e19) It was named in honour of the Northeastern region, or &#8220;Isan region,&#8221; since it was first found in the Northeast.
