{"id":10858,"date":"2020-10-03T06:44:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-03T06:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/science.msu.ac.th\/en\/?p=10858"},"modified":"2022-11-17T07:39:14","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T07:39:14","slug":"a-new-species-of-dischidia-apocynaceae-asclepiadoideae-from-north-eastern-thailand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/science.msu.ac.th\/en\/a-new-species-of-dischidia-apocynaceae-asclepiadoideae-from-north-eastern-thailand\/","title":{"rendered":"A new species of <i>Dischidia<\/i> (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) from North-eastern Thailand"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Assistant Professor Dr Wilawan Promprom<\/strong> and <strong>Assistant Professor Dr Wannachai Chatan,<\/strong> researchers from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Mahasarakham University, discovered a new species of Dischidia (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) from north-eastern Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong> <em>Dischidia phuphanensis<\/em>\u00a0 Chatan\u00a0 &amp;\u00a0 Promprom,\u00a0 a\u00a0 new\u00a0 species\u00a0 from\u00a0 north-eastern\u00a0 Thailand,\u00a0 is\u00a0 described\u00a0 and illustrated. The new species is similar to <em>D. tonkinensis<\/em> Costantin, but is distinguished by the shape of its leaves, the apices of the staminal corona lobes, the colour of the corolla and the absence of a corolline corona. The distinguishing characters of similar species are discussed. A key for the identification of those species in Thailand without pitcher-like leaves is provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Dischidia phuphanensis<\/em><\/strong> Chatan &amp; Promprom, <strong><em>sp. nov.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong>: <em>Dischidia phuphanensis<\/em> is most similar to <em>D. tonkinensis<\/em>, but the new species differs from the latter in its elliptic or narrowly elliptic or slightly oblanceolate leaves (leaves in <em>D. tonkinensis<\/em> are ovate to ovate elliptic, rarely obovate), apex of corona lobes obtuse (with tips pointing downward in <em>D. tonkinensis<\/em>), yellow base of the corolla tube and light yellow or white apices of the lobes (white or orange-yellow corolla tube and lobes in <em>D.\u00a0 tonkinensis<\/em>) and the absence of a corolline corona (corolline corona present in <em>D. tonkinensis<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/science.msu.ac.th\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-44.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/science.msu.ac.th\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-44.png 602w, https:\/\/science.msu.ac.th\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-44-300x246.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><figcaption><em>Dischidia\u00a0phuphanensis. (\u0e40\u0e16\u0e32\u0e23\u0e31\u0e01\u0e19\u0e49\u0e2d\u0e22)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Etymology:<\/strong> The specific epithet of <em>Dischidia phuphanensis<\/em> refers to its type locality, the Phuphan mountain range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preliminary conservation status:<\/strong> One population of Dischidia phuphanensis was found at the type locality in Phu Pha Yol National Park, Sakon Nakhon Province, northeast Thailand.\u00a0 It is estimated to number fewer than 250 mature individuals.\u00a0 Therefore, it should be considered \u201cEndangered (EN)\u201d according to the IUCN criteria D (IUCN 2017).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffea00\">Promprom W, Chatan W (2020) A new species of <em>Dischidia<\/em> (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) from North-eastern Thailand.
